Early this afternoon, during the Sister City International (SCI) Summer Leadership and Annual Business Meeting in Durham, North Carolina, North Miami Mayor Alix Desulme Ed.D., as Board Secretary to the esteemed Board of Directors for Sister Cities International. With this appointment, Mayor Desulme became the first Haitian American ever to serve on the Executive Board of Directors since its founding by President Eisenhower in 1956. This appointment marks a significant milestone for Sister Cities, reinforcing its commitment to fostering diversity and excellence, and innovation in global relations.
Sister Cities International, an American nonprofit, is focused on “creating global relationships based on culture, education, information, and trade exchanges.” The City of North Miami has played an active role with Sister Cities International since the early 90s and, in October of 2007, established its first Sister City Program with the city of Delmas, Haiti under the leadership of Mayor Kevin Burns. North Miami has been and will continue to be a model of how to run an influential municipal sister city.
Mayor Desulme brings an exceptional track record of public service, devotion to education, and unwavering dedication to improving the City of North Miami. Having volunteered and served with the City of North Miami since his youth, Mayor Desulme has consistently demonstrated strong leadership skills and a profound understanding of the needs and aspirations of the community. Mayor Desulme is no stranger to leadership positions within Sister Cities International, as he was elected on the Board of Directors and the Chair of the Membership Committee in previous years. As Membership Chair, Mayor Desulme was responsible for recruiting various cities to join the nonprofit organization.
In his new role as Board Secretary, Mayor Desulme will play a pivotal role in guiding and facilitating the decision-making process within the Board of Directors. His extensive experience in governance and strategic planning will be invaluable in driving Sister Cities International’s mission forward and ensuring that it remains at the forefront of the cultural and educational landscape.
