He has chased down all sorts of mysteries and histories of our beloved South Florida for over three decades. And beginning February the 8th, South Florida Historian will bring 11 subjects to life each second Tuesday at the Sunny Isles Beach Gateway Center Ballroom located at 151 Sunny Isles Boulevard.

Becerra, who began his career at The Barnacle State Park, (Miami’s oldest residence), as the youngest guide there at 16 years old, has worked as an interpreter at no less than seven local, state, and national parks in and around Miami.

He discovered and grew quite fond of the Sunny Isles Beach area when, during the height of the Elian Gonzales saga in April of 2000, Becerra had rented a room at the Desert Inn for a week. He returned many years later to assist The Social Citizens of Southeast Florida on their monthly bus tours to historic locations mainly, south of Sunny Isles Beach. He and president Dennis Stubbolo envisioned a lunch & learn series and were about to launch it when the pandemic hit a spike and The Social Citizens office ended up being way too small for what they envisioned would be a twelve person (max) event in their offices at the One Neatanya Building, also located in Sunny Isles Beach.

“So I marched them over to the Gateway Center and introduced them to Sylvia Flores and Jessica Roark and they instantly picked up where we had left off, only this time in a spacious setting where we could social distance and learn from Cesar.” – said President Dennis Stubbolo.

And learn you can. Becerra will be tackling the following topics each month – focusing on South Florida history – in a series that has been fully sponsored by the City of Sunny Isles Beach. The lectures are FREE. There will be no entry costs, but snacks will be available for sale as well as a cadre of historic books that Becerra will bring each week including a few of his own.

The first event will take place on Tuesday, February 8th, at 11 am and last till noon and will tackle the origin story of Miami and the defense of Mary Brickell as a bona -fide co-mother of The Magic City.

Becerra recently wrote a book called Orange Blossom 2.0 that debuted both at last summer’s 125th anniversary celebration of the birth of Miami and at the Miami International Book Fair just two months ago.
