Colonel Terrence “Rock” Salt, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Ret.), received the Everglades Coalition “Everglades Hall of Fame” award on Jan. 26 for his lifetime commitment to Everglades restoration.

The Tropical Audubon Society Board of Directors vice president and conservation chair was honored by his conservation colleagues at the Everglades Coalition’s annual awards ceremony conducted at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa in Bonita Spring.

The award was conceived in 2003 to recognize those who have made a significant lifetime commitment to Everglades restoration. Its recipients have been Everglades champions from many walks of life, united in the ability to persuade and persevere on behalf of the region’s irreplaceable “River of Grass.”

Salt led the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) effort to attain congressional authorization and funding for the Kissimmee River Restoration project, setting the course for the start of Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). He remained part of CERP’s planning process via his role with the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Task Force and Governor’s Commission for a Sustainable South Florida. He has been active in Everglades restoration ever since.

“This visionary gentleman has dedicated the last 30-plus years of his life to restoring and protecting the Everglades, and has been instrumental in stewarding CERP from its inception,” said Everglades Coalition Board member and Tropical Audubon Society senior conservation director Lauren Jonaitis, who introduced Salt.

By awarding its highest honor to Col. Salt, the Everglades Coalition etched in stone his tireless work on Everglades restoration.

Tropical Audubon Society president José Francisco Barros attended the induction ceremony, and noted, “I’m incredibly proud of Rock for receiving this richly deserved honor. His acceptance speech was inspiring to everyone in the room. I’m truly privileged to serve alongside this amazing conservation hero on our board of directors.”

In his acceptance speech, Salt observed that he views himself as the “cheerleader” and “coach” who helped bring together Department of the Interior scientists and staff, Native American tribal members, and other interested parties in the effort to restore the Everglades. He went on to credit his wife of 57 years for her support.

“It’s not me getting this award, it’s Heather and me, and all of us,” Salt noted. “And it’s in this context I’m grateful beyond words for this incredible honor.”
