A long overdue promise for the residents of South Dade and District 8 is finally being realized. When completed, this bridge will enhance the major arterial road that is 87th Avenue by connecting SW 164th Street to SW 163 Terrace and will cross over the C-100 canal.
The Court denied Plaintiffs’ claim that residents were not able to provide input, holding that “any allegation that the County failed to provide notice and an opportunity to speak on the subject bridge matter is belied by the evidence.”
In its ruling, the Court held that the process to place the 87th Avenue bridge on the Board’s agenda revealed “no ambiguities.” The Court ruled, “in accordance with the plain meaning of the text of Ordinance No. 20-38 and all other applicable laws and rules, the Board properly added the proposed County Resolution No. R-88-21 to the agenda of its regularly scheduled February 2, 2021 meeting and took action at that meeting to adopt it. Plaintiffs’ request to invalidate that resolution finds no support in any applicable law.”
“Today, is a win for the residents of District 8 and for Miami-Dade County as a whole,” stated Commissioner Cohen Higgins. “Miami-Dade is one of the largest growing metropolitan areas and we must ensure that our residents have the proper infrastructure that decreases traffic, enhances safety, and improves our County’s overall emergency response times.”
Public safety was the main impetus for this project, which was supported by a Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue study that showed 23 percent of life-threatening calls over the past four years, may have been impacted by a slower emergency response, as responding crews could not directly cross the C-100 canal. Upon completion, this new bridge will make it quicker and more convenient for our emergency services and our residents to reach their destinations.
