Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jean Monestime has issued the following statement in response to Saturday’s deadly earthquake in Haiti.
“Today Haiti suffered utter devastation as another catastrophic earthquake struck the country this morning. The terrible 7.2 magnitude earthquake destroyed large portions of the Southwest and Grand’Anse regions, based on images currently shared on social media. The potential effect of this monster quake in human lives will leave the nation of Haiti with yet another shocking, incomprehensible and tragic chapter of its painful history.
As we await the assessment of the full impact of this horrific event, we pray for the hundreds of families whose loved ones are currently unaccounted for under the rubble.
We weep and pray most especially for those Haitian children whose lives over the past 11 years have been so traumatically and painfully filled with emotional scars. Scars that will probably take longer to heal than the country itself.
It is our hope that after this natural disaster, the Haitian people find peace at last, and resolve more than ever to leave a more stable republic and steadier ground for the children of Haiti to inherit.”
