On Friday, March 11, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally Heyman hosted an Electric Bicycle Donation Event benefiting District 4 Police Departments. Commissioner Heyman donated electric bicycles to 12 of her Municipal Police Departments and the Miami-Dade Police Department Intracoastal Station. The event, which included assigning and sizing bicycles to officers and training for hybrid use of gears and electric, was conducted by Mack Cycle personnel at the Miami-Dade Police Department Intracoastal Station.

“Public safety has always been a priority for me, I’m happy to be able to provide another tool to assist Law Enforcement and our community,” said Commissioner Heyman. “Police in the community, out of patrol cars and on bikes makes them more accessible and approachable.”

Heyman’s latest donation follows decades of leadership and support for Law Enforcement. In addition to sponsoring “pro-safety” legislation, Commissioner Heyman’s generosity includes fund-raising for Fallen Officers, purchasing Segways and Cruiser Bikes for community patrol, and creating and sponsoring the Cops, Kids, and Community Fishing Days.

The electric bicycles were purchased by Commissioner Heyman from funds allocated by the FTX Arena naming rights agreement, earmarked for public safety.

  1. Great idea… but these bikes should come with gym enrollments. It is amazing how many members of the police force are obese. [Yes, I wrote that.] To bike around Miami-Dade – even electric – one needs to be in somewhat decent shape. Will they be able to run (or bike) after a suspect, for example, or being of real help in typical emergencies, if they can hardly catch their breath after peddlin’ for a block in 79 degrees? just wondering.
