Beverley McGhee

Beverley McGhee, co-founder with her husband Jim McGhee of Alexander Montessori Schools in Palmetto Bay, passed away on Dec. 29. Beverley McGhee’s mentor, Dr. Elizabeth Caspari, was trained by Dr. Maria Montessori.

McGhee founded Alexander Montessori School in 1963, when after searching for an early childhood facility for the couple’s two children she was not satisfied with anything available at the time. To ensure that her own children would get an excellent educational head start, she became certified as a Preschool Montessori Teacher and then as an Elementary Montessori Teacher. The school grew and became one of the foremost Montessori schools in the country.

Beverley was buried at New Hope Baptist Cemetery in Pollard, AR, next to her beloved husband Jim, at a private service attended only by the immediate family.

A memorial Celebration of Life mass will take place in Miami on Saturday, Feb. 28, at St. Matthew Anglican Episcopal Church, 7410 Sunset Dr., Miami, FL 33143.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Montessori Society Teacher Training Scholarship Fund.

Her son James, who continues to run the school, posted on social media, “Dear Friends and Family: My brother Alex, my wife Joyce, and my adult children Betty Alice and AJ, are so grateful for all your condolences, thoughts, and prayers during this time.”

Lionel Carrasco posted, “Beverly was a force of light that impacted the life of so many children and our families. It is hard to say goodbye to people we love and admire. We and our children will forever be thankful for her smiles and wisdom.”

Niki Kristine, a former student, said, “My life was forever changed thanks to Mrs. McGhee. I will always cherish all of the years I spent with her during my time at Alexander Montessori School.”
