Last quarter, I sponsored a resolution to do an appropriation of funds through the state to support the Miami Gardens Higher Education initiative, and we were able to make it into the budget at $75,000 with the help of our state senators and representatives. I was one of the only Councilmembers able to secure funds through this past state legislative session.
In Service Of Our Community
My office sponsored a resolution to launch the Internet for All initiative to provide low cost internet with broadband services — with the cost of the service ranging from $5 to $20 — in partnership with AT&T. In addition, we continue with our STEM Saturdays every third Saturday, in partnership with Dibia DREAM and St. Thomas University. The program creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy and enables the next generation of innovators to dream big. We also started Table Talk Tuesday every first Tuesday of the month, essentially providing a casual environment for residents to come and talk about things they would like to see happen in their City, or to just have a great conversation.
We continued with our pop-up grocery store and healthy cooking demo, featuring a certified nutritionist, in partnership with EatWell Exchange. We’re educating everyone on the importance of consuming healthier foods and embracing a healthier lifestyle. We provided gift cards to more than 100 residents to shop at Walmart after they toured the facility with the nutritionist and learned about the healthiest ways to eat and shop.
I was able to secure $50,000 of grant funding through the Home Depot to purchase hurricane supplies that would be distributed to residents at our Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex. Essentially, residents would receive cases of water, LED flashlights and first aid kits for their families. It’s very important that they have the basic necessities to weather a storm, should one come our way.
With inflation and gas prices going up, next quarter we will be sponsoring a gas giveaway in partnership with Calder Casino and Supreme Roofing where residents will receive $40 gas cards. I’ll also be partnering with Calvary Chapel North Miami to facilitate our annual Book Bag Giveaway, providing book bags and uniform vouchers to the students starting in August. I also look forward to sponsoring some legislation to aggressively create workforce housing and programs for our veterans.
The Place To Be
Miami Gardens is the place to be because, here, you can envision a comfortable life in a place that provides opportunities. Most importantly, you and your family can play together. And Miami Gardens is expanding. We’re welcoming world-class events, so you can experience events in your backyard. If you want to be a part of a growing, thriving, well run City, Miami Gardens really is where you want to be.
