Palmetto Bay District 2 Councilmember Steve Cody has announced a project that he hopes will save the lives of children in the village. Dubbed “Let’s Be Safer Together in Palmetto Bay,” the project’s goal is to reduce the number of children injured or killed in traffic accidents on village streets.

“This is a program that has been used in other communities and they have seen a drop in the number of accidents involving children, and so what I wanted to do with this was to get a similar result,” Councilmember Cody said. “Any child that is injured or almost injured because people are speeding is something that we can’t avoid, because we can’t change the route on Old Cutler Road and we can’t change US1, but on our village streets we can make a difference and so I’m trying to bring everyone together so that we can do that.”

Cody released a statement recently saying that surveys done by the village show that residents’ No. 1 concern is traffic. Traffic on Old Cutler Road and US1 is mainly controlled by the State of Florida, and Miami-Dade County has jurisdiction over county roads like SW 87th Avenue and SW 184th Street. Cody said that residents can take matters into their own hands.

“We can make changes to traffic flow and speed limits if we can back it up with studies and dumps of data. But there is one way we can make our streets safer without having to satisfy a bunch of bureaucrats in Washington, Tallahassee or Downtown Miami.”

Cody said that in communities all over the country residents are putting up signs to remind drivers to slow down. He heard about the approach being used in Carlsbad, CA and it worked. Accidents involving children dropped.

He proposed that the village ouncil create a similar program in Palmetto Bay. They adopted it and the signs are making their way all across the village. Anyone wanting a sign for their yard may contact Councilmember Cody at scody@palmettobay-fl.gov, or call 786-570-0363, with their name and address and he will personally bring a sign to them.
