Daniel Guerra, candidate for Commissioner Group II
Daniel Guerra

Daniel Guerra is running for Commissioner Group II in the City of South Miami election on November 5. The South Miami News asked him “What would you do in the first 100 days if elected?” His response follows:

I would say it’s important to note that without yet being elected I have already begun working on items in the city. Specifically, there will be a change coming before the commission to the zoning code regarding non-conforming single family non-conforming residential homes. In reviewing the code, I found that we had an overbearing and unreasonably restrictive language that could make it difficult for somebody to comply and therefore lose their home. The change will align our code with what other municipalities have which is much better for our community.

As public safety is my top priority, I would immediately meet with our police chief and other leadership in the police force as well as city staff to see where we have opportunities to make improvements and continue to upgrade our police force and equipment.

I would also meet with city staff to review our city budget and discuss priorities such as programs for our community and the children of our community, as well as review the capital improvement plan for infrastructure and equipment that is the city’s responsibility.

The economic development of our downtown will be incredibly important to create revenue by increasing our commercial tax base and at the same time create a lively enjoyable environment for our community.

Meeting with staff to review traffic strategies and continue to discuss budgeting for this important item will be on the top of the agenda.

Sustainability programs in our city are very important and the protection of our tree canopy and waterways is critical to the enjoyability and beautification of our city as well as needed for protecting the natural habitat for all.

Improving our communication will be on my agenda. We need to meet our residents with information where they are. Learning what forms of communication our residents prefer will help us send out information in diverse ways to reach our diverse community.

I will add that from day one I will be very reachable and accessible for all residents of South Miami
