Danny Rodriguez, candidate for Commissioner Group II
Danny Rodriguez

Danny Rodriguez is running for Commissioner Group II in the City of South Miami election on November 5. The South Miami News asked him “What would you do in the first 100 days if elected?” His response follows:

In my first 100 days, my top priority will be revitalizing Downtown South Miami. I will work
diligently to initiate this process by meeting with the City Manager to discuss proposals for
renovating the downtown area. While there are existing proposals for updating our streetlights and sidewalks, they have become outdated. I will also thoroughly review the city budget alongside the City Manager to identify potential funding sources for these crucial projects. Most importantly, I am committed to ensuring that residents have a voice in shaping the future of downtown rather than allowing special interest groups to dominate the conversation. Your input is invaluable to me.

My vision is to transform the perception of downtown from a destination for specific purposes into a vibrant area for exploration and enjoyment. By encouraging more visitors to downtown, we can significantly boost foot traffic to local businesses, which are the backbone of our community. Supporting these businesses is my top priority for our city’s prosperity.

Additionally, I will explore the possibility of capping parking fees after 8 p.m. to make it easier for residents and visitors to enjoy our shops and restaurants. South Miami has a reputation for issuing parking tickets and discouraging patrons from visiting. We must foster a welcoming environment, and eliminating late-night parking fines is a step.

Once we implement these initial changes, I will address the concerns raised by residents during my door-to-door outreach over the past few months. These issues include requests for speed bumps, improved street lighting in specific neighborhoods, managing the local peacock population, cleaning our canals, repairing broken infrastructure, and providing more activities and sports for children in our community.

I will also begin re-establishing the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) in South Miami to incentivize and support the economic growth and revitalization of Downtown South Miami and the Marshall Williamson area.

As a business owner for the past 20 years, a South Miami resident for over a decade, and a
member of the Planning and Zoning Board, I bring a wealth of experience to the table. I intend to apply the knowledge and insights I’ve gained to serve our community effectively. I promise that my door will always be open to residents, and I will remain actively engaged with the community throughout my term.
