Sixth Female President of the Dade County Medical Association since its founding in 1903
The Dade County Medical Association (DCMA) is proud to announce the inauguration of its new president, Patricia Ares-Romero, M.D., F.A.M.S.A. The transition of leadership took place on Saturday, June 1st, 2024, during the 114th DCMA Presidential Inauguration Gala, held at the JW Marriott-Miami on Brickell.
The event celebrated the accomplishments of the immediate past president, Dr. Carmel J. Barrau, M.D., and welcomed Dr. Patricia Ares-Romero, M.D., as the sixth female president in the association’s 121-year history. Dr. Ares-Romero’s presidency marks a significant milestone in the DCMA’s ongoing commitment to diversity and excellence in medical leadership.
In her inaugural address, Dr. Patricia Ares-Romero emphasized the importance of the association’s advocacy role. “During my tenure as the 114th president of the DCMA, my primary goal will be to strengthening advocacy for the quality and sustainability of the practice of medicine, on behalf of both physicians and patients.”
Dr. Ares-Romero brings a wealth of experience and a passion for advancing medical practice and patient care in Miami-Dade County. As a Fellow of the American Medical Society Association (F.A.M.S.A.), Dr. Ares-Romero has been a prominent figure in the medical community, advocating for healthcare improvements and physician support.
“With my background in mental health and addiction medicine, I am acutely aware of the pressing need to address these issues with compassion and urgency, and I am committed to making them a top priority in Miami-Dade during my presidency.”
The DCMA’s Presidential Inauguration Gala was also an opportunity to honor the service of Dr. Carmel J. Barrau, whose tenure has been marked by significant contributions to the association and the broader medical community. Reflecting on his accomplishments, Dr. Barrau highlighted that “Our efforts helped us start signing pivotal agreements with various universities and hospitals. The first one, was the signing a Letter of Understanding with the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University, integrating their medical students and future medical residents into the DCMA. The second one, was signed with the South Florida Community Health for residents.”
During the evening, Dr. Ares-Romero expressed her gratitude to the DCMA leaders that will work with her this year, including the Board of Directors, Advisory Members, Physician in Training Representative, and Medical Students Representatives. They bring a wealth of experience and a shared commitment to advancing the medical profession and improving healthcare in Miami-Dade County.
