Deering Estate Ghost Tours: The Most Haunted Place in South Florida

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Fall is right around the corner, signaling the start of everyone’s favorite spine-chilling, hair-raising season. Halloween, with its monsters lurking at every corner, opens the doors to an exciting and frightening experience. Deering Estate is once again hosting the haunting thrills of its famous Ghost Tours. Throughout September and October, there will be tours hosted on select Thursdays from 7:30 to 9:30 pm.

Deering Estate Ghost Tours are a unique experience, providing an inside look into the history of the Estate and its paranormal activities. Considered to be one of the most haunted places in South Florida, tour guides will recount stories of historic events, the lives of the previous residents, and several of the ghost sightings experienced by visitors and staff.

10,000 years of history is covered throughout the tour. Guests will be taken through the same grounds the Indigenous people of South Florida roamed, as well as Miami’s early settlers. Several ghosts actively haunt the Estate, including Mr. and Mrs. Deering. Another ghost affectionately known as Peter, often described as a young, little boy, has been seen on the tours as well. The Deering Estate also allows visitors to bring different types of equipment in order to detect these paranormal occurrences. EMF meters (measure electromagnetic fields), cameras, and pendulums are encouraged and welcomed on the tours. Some of the more common experiences include apparitions, voice anomalies, and movement of various objects.

Guests are also given some tools at the beginning of the tour, such as divining rods. These rods normally allow people to ask simple “yes” or “no” questions, providing the ghost the opportunity to answer directly. It is set up so visitors can explore the Estate’s paranormal activity on their own, providing each guest with their own distinctive experience that they cannot get anywhere else in Miami.

Johnny Bananas, the host of 1st Look on NBC, went to the Estate to check out the tour for himself. While skeptical, he was inclined to check for any voice anomalies produced by the ghosts. He was led into the guest room, the most haunted room on the Estate, hoping to hear Peter himself. He managed to get through to Peter, asking Peter to “blink twice” if his dad was not letting him talk. Soon enough, Peter tapped twice on the window. Johnny Bananas sure went home as a believer that night. Click the link here to check out the video.

Here is an interview with one of the employees who help lead the Deering Estate Ghost Tours. They discuss their most memorable experiences and favorite parts of the tour.

Q: What is the most terrifying paranormal experience you’ve had while leading the Ghost Tours?

A: Well, I won’t say it was terrifying, but it was certainly an unexplained occurrence.  In the process of doing my house check one morning, I noticed that a very large painting had fallen off the wall.  What we were never able to explain was that there was no damage to the wall, the hooks, the rails, or the wire that held the painting in place.  Simply, the painting, which is well over 7′ x 3′ and very heavy, was on the ground, laying on its side, against the wall.  The frame was damaged, but nothing else.

Q: What is your favorite part of these tours?

A: My favorite part of the tour is when we allow a few moments for our guests to perform their own investigations with EMF readers, divining rods, or pendulums.  Our guests love it when they get results!

Q: How do you make sure that the guests are engaged and potentially achieving contact with the other side?

A: We make sure that the guests are having the best time and are receptive to paranormal activity by explaining the tools they will be using, putting them at ease, letting them know that if they believe they will feel something and they are open to that, it may just happen for them.

Q: What do you think makes Ghost Tours so appealing to the general public?

A: People are always curious about the unknown.  We have had many paranormal investigators come and get results, we have had staff and guests who seem to experience paranormal interactions and these findings are what our tour is based on.  Our guests just want to see if they can experience some of these paranormal interactions themselves!

Starting September 1st, make sure to stop by Deering Estate for your own turn at these hauntingly paranormal Ghost Tours. For more information, and to purchase tickets, visit the Deering Estate website.
