Dolphins Big Brother Stu Weinstein was Always Watching

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula exits the field while escorted by Stu Weinstein, the team’s head of security. A longtime private investigator, Weinstein spent 34 years as the Dolphins Director of Security. Nobody in the Miami Dolphins organization knew more about the team than Weinstein–including Shula. Whether it was doing background checks on players and coaches or overseeing the sidelines, Weinstein knew every piece of information about the team. Photo from Larry Blustein.

Weinstein joined the Dolphins in 1985. He was a man who wore many hats. There wasn’t a situation he wasn’t prepared for. His responsibilities ranged from crack house rescues to obtaining passports for players. He oversaw security at practice and in the bench area during games. He researched the background of free agents and college seniors, and assisted Dolphin players, coaches and staff with legal issues, from traffic tickets to felonies. Over the years, Weinstein worked for 10 different head coaches, accompanying them on and off the field, to news conferences and to community events, and driving them to the stadium on game day. He literally looked over the coach’s shoulder, and is often in the background of photos showing sideline celebrations over the past three decades.

A private investigator before his stint with the Dolphins, Weinstein was a pioneer in his field. When he was hired, there were only four other NFL teams that had a position in his field. His work week is typically 70 hours. Weinstein claims he built up 2 years of unused vacation time. His old boss the late Don Shula hasn’t coached the Dolphins in 27 years. But in recent years, it was Weinstein who represented the stability of the Dolphins organization. Now retired, He currently serves as a Volunteer Ambassador With the Miami Dolphins Alumni as well as Volunteering with Catch 81 with the Jason Taylor Foundation with Sheraton House and with City Rev Church.
