On Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 5:30 p.m., the Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust (MDEAT) is set to host a transformative event at Florida Memorial University’s esteemed Lou Rawls Center for the Performing Arts in Miami Gardens. MDEAT Speaks: The School-to-Prison Pipeline Symposium Part II: The Role of Economics is poised to be a dynamic gathering focused on delivering tangible economic solutions to disrupt the persistent school-to-prison pipeline. Attendees can expect an insightful program geared towards empowering individuals with the tools needed to effect positive change.
“MDEAT strives to ensure the equitable participation of Blacks in Miami-Dade County’s economic growth,” said Bill Diggs, MDEAT’s executive director. “It is hard to participate in the greater economy if you are a Black child with an arrest record. Our agency is leveraging research and government resources to advocate for policies to help disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline and build on-ramps to prosperity for our youth.”
Designed to engage the community, MDEAT Speaks brings together influential figures, community leaders, and public officials to present cutting-edge research and highlight accessible resources tailored for economic development. By featuring renowned subject matter experts in economic development, housing, juvenile justice, research, and public policy, MDEAT strives to fortify South Florida with the knowledge and strategies necessary for sustainable progress. In MDEAT’s recent study “Trends in Youth Arrests in Miami-Dade County: 2010 – 2022,” University of Miami researchers analyzed statistics, revealing that Black youth face disproportionate arrest rates despite being a statistical minority.
