Within five days of Hurricane Milton’s landfall, Farm Share, the state’s leading food nonprofit and largest independent food bank, has already deployed 1.5 million pounds of shelf-safe food, water, and emergency meal kits to Floridians in 23 counties – with more on the way. In addition to ongoing disaster relief, Farm Share is also providing fresh food to organizations that are cooking hot meals for Floridians devastated by Hurricane Milton.
“Hurricane Milton really shook up communities all across Florida, each facing its own set of hurdles,” shared Stephen Shelley, CEO of Farm Share. “We got to work right away, rolling out food and water within 36 hours of the storm to make sure families had what they needed. And we’re in it for the long haul, ready to support these communities every step of the way as they start rebuilding.”
In just 36 hours after Hurricane Milton made landfall Wednesday night, Farm Share mobilized more than 2 tons of essential aid to impacted counties, beginning distribution efforts by Friday morning. Swiftly responding to Floridians over the weekend, Farm Share sent 12 trucks directly into the hard-hit Tampa Bay region over the weekend to ensure immediate support for those affected. The nonprofit also hosted an all-hands-on-deck with local employees, volunteers, and elected officials to reload their convoys of critical supplies.
Farm Share is working closely with the Florida Division of Emergency Management, local emergency management officials, and its own statewide network of community partners to optimize response efforts and conduct community relief operations in areas most affected by the storm.
After Hurricane Helene battered Florida’s west coast and Big Bend areas earlier this month, Farm Share delivered more than 2 million pounds of aid to the hardest hit communities within the first nine days following landfall, part of the more than 5 million pounds of aid to all disaster-declared communities since Hurricane Helene response efforts began.
In the aftermath of a hurricane or other natural disasters, Farm Share’s relief efforts focus on the critical days and weeks immediately following a storm, frequently serving communities within 24 hours. A reliable first responder, Farm Share has delivered millions of pounds of aid in the aftermaths of major hurricanes, including Hurricanes Ian in 2022, Idalia in 2023, and most recently Debby in August. When disasters strike, Farm Share stands ready to help families in need.
Additional details about Farm Share’s Hurricane Milton response efforts will be provided as they become available.
