The Florida Network of Youth and Family Services is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a significant federal grant to support the Shareet Cares Prevention Project. This transformative initiative, developed in honor of the late Shareet Pennino, an unwavering advocate for youth, seeks to prevent and interrupt youth homelessness across South Florida. The Florida Network will collaborate with Lutheran Services of Florida (LSF) and The Florida Housing Coalition to design, implement, and evaluate crucial prevention services as part of this groundbreaking project.
The Shareet Cares Project will serve youth in the community who are facing a multitude of challenges, including homelessness, running away, truancy, substance abuse, domestic violence, child abuse, neglect, and more. Many of these young individuals also struggle with co-occurring mental illnesses and are at risk of or have experienced sexual exploitation or trafficking. The target population for this project encompasses youth of any gender between the ages of 6-22.
Over the course of a 36-month grant cycle, the Shareet Cares Project will extend its reach across eight counties in South Florida, including Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, and Lee. The Florida Network anticipates collaborating with LSF and The Coalition to achieve the following milestones:
1. Develop one Multidisciplinary Homeless Youth Task Force (MHYT) that will convene a minimum of twelve times annually.
2. Create a minimum of one community needs assessment.
3. Establish a comprehensive identification and referral process to directly connect with 400 youth annually, totaling 1200 over the grant period.
The Shareet Cares Prevention Project embodies the spirit and dedication of Shareet Pennino, a legendary advocate for all youth who lived her life with joy and purpose. By preventing and interrupting youth homelessness, this project aims to honor her memory and ensure that young people across South Florida have the support and resources they need to thrive.
