One year ago, the world stopped when the deadly COVID-19 pandemic interrupted our lives. From social distancing, to sheltering in place, to the need to wear masks at all times, our world was turned upside down. Thousands lost loved ones, the economy crashed, and our confidence in our way of life was shaken. However, despite the challenges of 2020, Miami Gardens was resilient, remained committed to our vision to be a City of progress, and received the amazing honor of having our city designated an All-America City.
While many Cities were forced to drastically cut costs, Miami Gardens was fortunate to have the ability to continue serving our residents with no interruption to our services, and without sacrificing quality. Miami Gardens kept going. We continued the park renovations under the General Obligation Bond program, we distributed thousands of meals with partners such as Feeding South Florida and the Miami Dolphins Foundation, we provided mortgage and rental assistance to ensure residents could stay in their homes, and now there is a newly launched small business assistance program as well. We also lowered the crime rate in our City, and enhanced our public safety measures. Becoming a 2020 All-America City affirms the City’s commitment to civic engagement and creating a better quality of life for each and every resident to live, work and play.
Miami Gardens will continue to blaze trails as we work to get COVID-19 under control. Looking ahead, we will implement intergenerational programs connecting our seniors to our youth, increase youth participation in STEM, robotics, culinary and performing arts, and offer our youth alternative sports programs such as archery, boxing and gymnastics.
All of South Florida can be proud of what the City of Miami Gardens has accomplished; we are a city of progress with purpose, an All-America City.
