It’s been an exciting time for the City of Miami Gardens! On Saturday, May 13th, during the City’s 20th Anniversary Celebration, we had a wonderful experience honoring the pioneers — the first Councilmembers and past Mayors who contributed to building our City. It reminded us that we stand on each other’s shoulders, fostering growth and unity. The event was extraordinary and highlighted the progress we have made as a community.

Recently, I became the president of the Miami-Dade County League of Cities. I am honored to have been elected and to represent all municipalities in our County. This is a humbling experience, especially considering, with only three Mayors in our City’s history, Miami Gardens has produced three presidents for this prestigious group. It speaks volumes about who we are as a City.

I look forward to serving in that capacity, and I believe we can accomplish many things as one group of municipalities.

Investing in Our Community

I’m proud to confirm that the City’s finances remain in good order, the development projects are progressing, small businesses have opportunities, and major corporations are still trying to invest in Miami Gardens. This year continues to be a progressive one for the City of Miami Gardens. We completed a series of spectacular events, including the coveted Formula One and our own Jazz in the Gardens Music Festival, where several world-renowned acts performed, and people from around the world came and had a great time.

We continue to keep the needs of our community at the forefront of what we do. We have been focusing on improving the lives of our seniors, renovating their homes with the support of funds under the Formula One memorandum of understanding (MOU). We’re providing scholarships for students and are committed to supporting our small businesses by offering them opportunities to enhance their operations and access to capital. As development continues in our City, we strive to maintain that sense of community that makes Miami Gardens unique while embracing diversity and inclusivity.

Looking Ahead

The staple events, such as Rolling Loud, Juneteenth, and football season, continue to excite the Miami Gardens community. We are cheering for the success of our local sports teams, the Miami Heat and the Florida Panthers, and we’re looking forward to the possibility of hosting the Super Bowl in 2027. Miami Gardens truly stands out as a world-class sports destination.

We kicked off the second half of 2023 with the inaugural Mayor’s Cup Golf Tournament with proceeds from this event benefitting foster care kids at “His House.” Later in the fall, the Mayor’s Ball will take place and supports The Center for Family and Child Enrichment and its mission. We are also looking forward to other community initiatives like fishing trips with our kids and elderly residents.

Development on the 35-acre property is anticipated to begin this summer. Once completed, our residents can enjoy increased amenities, including access to more restaurants, shopping, and other activities in the City of Miami Gardens. The former Parkway Hospital site has also been demolished, and the developers hope to transform that property into a hotel and convention center.

As I envision the next 20 years, my hope is for Miami Gardens to remain true to its values and continue to be a place where everyone can live, work, play, and worship together.  A place where families instill a sense of pride in our children and be a shining example for generations to come. I see a City that’s growing, and when others see that, they want to be a part of it.
