High honors were bestowed on the Rotary Club of Coral Gables by Chapman Partnership for the Homeless with a special Volunteer of the Year Award.
The club was presented with Chapman Partnership’s New Frontier Volunteer Award by Chapman’s Wendy Viciana during a recent meeting on Zoom. Wendy virtually presented the award that had been delivered to club president Kelly Garces for all to see. Wendy expressed her appreciation for RCCG’s continued support since 2002 for Chapman Partnership’s efforts in helping the homeless and, most recently, stepping up to provide much needed entertainment (virtual bingo) for the homeless living at the HAC — thus, the new award for the club as the “New Frontier Volunteer.”
Following the meeting, Garces and RCCG past–president Yoli Woodbridge posed with the certificate.
This active club always holds a mixer on fifth Fridays throughout the year coordinated by past president Sally Baumgartner. This last fifth Friday, Apr. 30, the club convened at Rotary Centennial Park, a park they created in the Gables to celebrate Rotary’s 100th anniversary.
Coral Gables Bar Association also likes mixers and has joined with Gables Rotarians to meet every month at a new location. In April, Kao Sushi on Miracle Mile hosted a lovely mixer with lots of lawyers, judges and a few Rotarians enjoying the evening. Among the crowd enjoying the night were Judge William Altfield, Bruce Bounds, Bob Trescott, Jerry Kavulich and Frank Sexton, to mention a few.
In other service club news, the GFWC District 11 Spring meeting brought together 11 clubs from as far north as Northeast Miami to as far south as Key West with Zoom meeting on Wednesday, Apr. 28. District 11 director Brenda Merrill conducted the meeting during which most all of the 11 clubs in the district joined to share their volunteer efforts and plan for the General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ Spring Convention in Orlando. The convention will be held at the Rosen Plaza, May 14-16, during which time awards will be presented.
By the way, the district and area clubs are looking for nice items to include in gift baskets that will be raffled off. If interested in helping out, send email to gloria@cnews.net or contact Brenda at dd11@gfwcflorida.org.
Also coming up in May is A Safe Haven for Newborns Annual Golf Tournament on May 14 at Trump National Resort in Doral. This day of golf, food and fun promises to be another great fundraising event following a one year break due to the pandemic. Nick Silverio, Gina Perez, board and other dedicated volunteers have helped saved from abandonment 331 babies since A Safe Haven for Newborns was created. They continue to help moms 24/7 reaching beyond the state of Florida as word of their success grows.

Finally, I hope all the mothers and special women out there had a great Mother’s Day. Bless you all!
Until next time, keep making each day count, share an act of kindness every day and stay safe.
