The German International Parent Association (GIPA), a fixture of the Miami-Dade County public schools community for over 30 years, will serve up a hearty helping of German tradition to Miami’s citizens at its 32nd annual Oktoberfest on Saturday, October 7, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the German American Social Club (GASC), located at 11919 SW 56th St., Miami, Florida 33175.

Admission and parking are free for this afternoon of fun for the entire family in an outdoor carnival setting.  Tickets will be sold at the event for $1 each and can be used to purchase food, beverages, desserts, carnival rides, game booths, and children’s activities.

Oktoberfest began in Germany in 1810 as a celebration of the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria (who would later become king) to Princess Therese of Saxony.  Over the past 200 years, it has evolved into a popular, world-wide celebration of Bavarian food and culture that everyone, including Germans and non-Germans alike, can enjoy.  Oktoberfest takes place each year from mid-September through October.

A main goal of GIPA’s Oktoberfest event is to bring together residents from all of Miami’s communities to give them a festive glimpse of German culture and hospitality right in their own backyard.  In addition to classic Oktoberfest songs played by a professional accordion musician, and a DJ spinning both classic and modern hits, more than 200 children from the German language programs at three of Miami-Dade County’s public schools will delight attendees with a showcase of traditional German song and dance performances.

The day’s menu will include typical southern German food, including bratwurst, schnitzel, sauerkraut, red cabbage, potato salad, and of course, the world-renowned pretzels.   An abundant dessert and coffee buffet will be on offer in the GASC’s air-conditioned building.   A silent auction will feature a wide variety of items, and vendors will display merchandise and services.  Game booths will offer fun children’s games and activities, and carnival rides will provide entertainment for kids of all ages.

GIPA, also known as The German School of South Florida, Inc., was established in 1986.  The organization is a not-for-profit parent association whose mission is to support the German international language programs at Sunset Elementary School, G.W. Carver Middle School, and Coral Reef Senior High School.  For more information, please visit www.gipa.org.
