It’s been a good year for manga and I would like to highlight 5 titles I think any manga lover would enjoy.
- Trigun Deluxe Edition, Author Yasuhiro Nightow, Published by Dark Horse Comics
Dark Horse has finally reprinted Trigun for the third time, but this reprint is different in the form of Deluxe editions. This is the first one of 6 and man are we lucky to have this back and in such a great format, Check it out!
2. Initial D Omnibus Vol.1, Author Shuichi Shigeno, Published by Kodensha
2024 was a banner year for older titles coming back in a new way, original published by Tokyopop in the early 2000s with some questionable translations we finally have Intial D back on catalogues and shelves but this time? Two-in-one omnibus editions with a more accurate translation AND the original sound effects, a must buy for any car enthusiasts!
3. The Fable Vol.1, Author Katsuhisa Minami, Published by Kodensha
I got this title on a blind buy and wow it blew my socks off. Same format as Initial D here, gorgeous colorful two-in-one omnibus editions. This series starts going after the second omnibus so if you pick it up be patient with it, a great title for any manga collector who enjoys more realistic stories.
4. Ashita No Joe: Fighting For Tomorrow Vol. 1 by Asao Takamori & Tetsuya Chiba Publisher Vertical comics
It finally happened. The amazing folks over at Vertical comics have brought to the states a long awaited classic, Ashita No Joe. If you’re steeped in the culture of manga/anime or even Japanese culture you know the significance of this manga. For those that don’t, this is one of the best boxing manga and also one of the earliest examples of an amazing Shonen Jump title.
5. Thunder 3, Author Yuki Ikeda, Publisher Kodensha
This series came out of nowhere for me, a cutesy battle manga with a hardcore twist. Kodansha classifies this as an Isekai and if that’s the case it’s one of the better ones I’ve read. So far only two volumes have come out but it’s been such a thrill, check this out if you’re interested in battle manga with a twist.
