Officer Alex Murguido, a veteran of nearly 20 years with the City of Homestead Police Department, was honored by the Kiwanis Club of Homestead-South Dade with its first Officer of the Quarter Award.
The Kiwanis Club, one of South Florida’s most active community service organizations, presented the award to Murguido — the department’s most senior uniformed officer — at its weekly lunch meeting at Portofino Coal Fired Pizza restaurant, 650 NE 22 Terr., Homestead.
“I am honored that you selected me to receive this award,” Murguido said, as many of his fellow officers — including Chief Alexander E. Rolle Jr. — applauded.
Murguido, who began his career with Homestead in July 2003, was selected for the honor after the Kiwanis Club’s Police Recognition Committee reviewed winners of the force’s Officer of the Month recipients. During February, Murguido handled 115 primary calls, backed up his fellow officers 52 times and made 27 arrests. Amazingly, officer Murguido’s average response time of five minutes and 54 seconds was half of that of the shift average.
“You always hear people say, ‘where’s a cop when you need one,’” said committee chair Lew Matusow in presenting the award, along with committee member Carmen Bonilla.
“That certainly wasn’t the case with Officer Alex Murguido. He is always there for the people of Homestead.”
Chief Rolle, who attended the luncheon along with the majority of his command staff, was thrilled with Kiwanis’ Police Officer of the Quarter concept.
“Officer Murguido is an outstanding example of our department and is the perfect person to be the first recipient of this prestigious award,” Rolle said. “Being recognized by an organization like Kiwanis is important to our department because it shows our officers that we have the support of the community we’re sworn to serve and protect. That means a great deal to the entire department.”
Once the Kiwanis Club selects its four “Officer of the Quarter” honorees, a community-wide luncheon will be held featuring all the quarterly winners — and their families. At that luncheon the club will announce its selection as Police Officer of the Year.
