Homestead Vice Mayor Guzman recognizes local soccer league
Vice Mayor Julio Guzman recognizes Southern Homestead Soccer’s U-15 team for accomplishments in recent tournaments.

At the June Special Council Presentation Ceremony, Vice Mayor Julio Guzman celebrated the local youth league Southern Homestead Soccer’s U-15 team for its accomplishments in recent tournaments.

The teams and their coaches spent countless hours in the gym training to excel in their sport. In 2021 and 2022 all of that hard work paid off as they accumulated six-first place finishes in various tournaments.

“We wanted to honor these kids for their hard work on the field and their dedication to education in the classroom,” Vice Mayor Guzman said. “We also want to recognize the coaches for teaching these kids and providing them an outlet to learn, advance, all while making a difference in our community.”

Each child and coach was called to the dais to receive the awards. Vice Mayor Guzman presented the team mmbers and their coaches with a certificate of achievement for their hard work and dedication that has brought pride to the Homestead community.

Southern Homestead Soccer Academy is a youth sports league that does much more than teach its players the game of soccer. They also teach nutrition, reading, and provide homework help. Coaches teach the game of soccer while emphasizing the importance of respect, comradery, punctuality, order, and many other valuable attributes. Southern Homestead Soccer Academy was founded in 2013 with three teams, in their nine years in Homestead they have expanded to 10 soccer teams as well as offering after-school programs and summer camps.
