The Miami Dade Bar has recently introduced the Celeste H. Muir Judicial Professionalism Award to honor members of the judiciary who embody civility, fairness, and compassion – just as Judge Celeste Hardee Muir did during her 35 years of service to the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court of Miami-Dade County.
Judge Muir was the first woman to lead the Young Lawyers Section of the Miami Dade Bar, formerly known as the Dade County Bar Association. One of the most respected judges in Miami-Dade County, Judge Muir has a legacy of trailblazing leadership, unwavering dedication to justice, and – most notably – kindness and compassion, lessons she imparts unto every young practitioner in the field of law through her example.
Reflecting on Judge Muir’s Career and Values
Judge Muir began her career in law in 1973 as a clerk for U.S. District Judge William Mehrtens as his first female law clerk. Through her diligence and ingenuity working with Judge Mehrtens, she quickly became a seasoned member of the team and followed through with her efforts by becoming a partner for the respected firm of Frates, Floyd, Pearson, Stewart, Richman & Greer before becoming a named partner at Brigham, Moore, Muir, Gaylord, Schuster & Sachs in 1978. The path she blazed led her to the Miami-Dade County Court bench in 1985, and then the Circuit Court bench, where she served until her retirement in 2021.
Throughout Judge Muir’s career, she was celebrated for her wisdom, her integrity, and her perception. She was known for her thoroughness as much as for her thoughtfulness and developed a reputation as a fair and empathetic judge who was able to balance compassion with an immovable commitment to the law. Judge Muir’s impact on the community extended beyond her rulings and is a central part of the legacy she leaves behind; she was a role model encouraging a new generation of lawyers and judges to strive to treat others with respect and generosity.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Miami-Dade Judges
According to Elizabeth Hughes, Past Chair of the Miami Dade Bar’s Probate and Guardianship Committee, Judge Muir “is considered by the legal community to be patient, generous, thoughtful, and kind in her communications and dealings with all litigants while being fair, resolute, and reasoned in her rulings.”
The Celeste H. Muir Judicial Professionalism Award was established in her honor to encourage other judges who embody her patient, reasonable, and compassionate approach in court. The award will be presented annually by the Miami Dade Bar to a member of the judiciary whose conduct mirrors Judge Muir’s exemplary qualities as a member of the court and the community. Nominees will need to have at least five years on the bench and demonstrate fairness and accessibility in their judgments, recognized by their peers and the community for their respectful and level-headed approach to justice.
Celebrating Judge Muir’s Legacy of Professionalism
Richard Milstein, a past President of the Miami Dade Bar, noted particularly that “Judge Muir is iconic, and through this recognition to future generations, Judge Muir’s legacy will endure and be extolled for others to emulate.” The establishment of this annual award will permanently acknowledge her contributions to the judiciary as an individual and reinforces the standards of professionalism and civility she championed with all litigants.
Judge Muir’s enduring legacy is forever woven into the fabric of the Miami legal community. Her influence resonates through the countless individuals she mentored and inspired over her career, including her daughter, who helms J. Muir & Associates, P.A. By recognizing judges who embody the qualities Judge Muir exemplified throughout her career, the Celeste H. Muir Judicial Professionalism Award ensures that her dedication to justice, professionalism, and humanity will continue to inspire future generations in South Florida.
The Celeste H. Muir Judicial Professionalism Award is open to candidates with at least five years on the bench and will be presented at the Miami Dade Bar’s annual judicial reception. For nomination information and a list of all criteria, please visit the Miami Dade Bar.
