How a Housewife Gave The Miami Dolphins Their Name

Have you ever wondered how the Miami Dolphins got their name? You can thank a 33-year-old housewife from Miami named Marjorie Swanson. On this day 57 years ago, she won a contest that was held in 1965 in which the public was invited to vote for the team’s name. More than 19,843 entries were submitted. Of those entries, there were more than 2,100 different names. The name Dolphins had the most entries and was submitted by 662 people. The entries went through a 7-person screening committee headed by co-owner Danny Thomas.

“We think it is a terrific name for the team,” said co-owner Joe Robbie. ” It was Danny’s early choice and he was thrilled when it drew the most votes in our contest.”

Marjorie Swanson won two lifetime passes to Dolphins games with her nickname entry. The tiebreaker was picking the winner and score of the 1965 game between the University of Miami and Notre Dame. It ended in a scoreless tie. To read more stories about the Orange Bowl, visit us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ghostsoftheorangebowl/
