Tell us about the Health Channel.
Working with world-class healthcare organizations, South Florida PBS Health Channel is tackling issues such as mental health, cancer, and medical breakthroughs with original and for South Florida PBS acquired programming. We have original programs like Health Insiders that dig deep into reliable and actionable advice from doctors, specialists, nurses, nutritionists, and fitness specialists. Other original programs, like Hope is Here, feature inspiring and uplifting, personal stories told by cancer survivors and their families. On the other side of the spectrum, we dispel sex myths, look into the science of sex and highlight different aspects of sexual health with Sex Talk with Dr. Lia, Sexual Health Expert, and Associate Professor of Health and Human Performance at Nova Southeastern University. We’ve produced over 600 Living Minute episodes, a series that focuses on sharing innovative medical breakthroughs and stories. Additionally, we host monthly Town Halls that address the public’s health concerns and offer a way to ask and get answers from medical experts in real-time. Since inception, we’ve hosted 25 town halls receiving over 4 million digital impressions and 3 million digital views.
What led to the creation of the Health Channel?
South Florida PBS hosts listening sessions which are instrumental in creating our strategic plan. In the 2017 listening sessions, our community members expressed their interest in and need for reliable health information. In 2018, South Florida PBS launched the Health Channel. In conjunction with the broadcast channel, we developed an advanced online service including a user-friendly website with more than 5,000 unique health-related and medical videos, providing access to health information and a marketplace of products and services. We’re very proud of the three Sharecare awards we’ve received for our original documentary, Fauci: The Virus Hunter, and two for our original series, Hope is Here Episode 4 – Gina’s Story. The annual Sharecare Awards honor the creators of best-in-class productions and programs that promote well-being and embody the spirit of “sharing care.” Established in 2019 in association with The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, New York Chapter, the program also aims to inspire and elevate the individuals and organizations whose creative use of media are empowering people around the world to live healthier.
What impact has the Health Channel had on the community since its inception?
The Health Channel has a global reach because of our digital platforms (social
media pages and website). In 2020, we were able to reach individuals on a national level by providing daily COVID developments and information which were shared with several PBS stations across the country. Nevertheless, we are also focused on maintaining a solid local connection as we did in 2021 when the Surfside condominium building collapsed causing loss, confusion, and tragedy for many. As a result, we launched a campaign using our FREE telemedicine service, AskHanna, to provide mental health support to the individuals affected.
As you can see, our mission is to serve the community through broadcast, digital and in-person engagement. A perfect example is our upcoming Women’s Health Fair on Saturday, March 25th. It will be an event that brings together women in Miami-Dade County to learn and live a healthier life through different seminars regarding women’s mental, emotional, and physical health. They will be able to interact with different experts in the fields of lactation, CPR, and receive health screenings. The event registration is at:
