Miami-Dade County Public Schools has appointed Jason H. Allen, EdS, as principal of the high school program of New World School of the Arts.
An academic administrator and educator, Allen will be responsible for planning, organizing, administering and directing academic and operational activities at the high school level, which are essential to the operation of NWSA.
“As the new principal at New World School of the Arts, I am excited and humbled to be a part of such an incredible partnership,” Allen said. “The history and traditions provide the foundation of greatness that is New World School of The Arts. I look forward to building positive and collaborative relationships with students, parents, staff and the college community as together we strive for greatness.”
Dr. Jeffrey Hodgson, provost of NWSA added, “Mr. Allen joins a unique institution that provides the very best arts training in South Florida through a unique partnership of institutions. We all welcome him to his new role as high school principal and know that together we will continue the tradition of excellence that New World School of the Arts has built over three decades.”
Prior to joining NWSA, Jason H. Allen was principal of M-DCPS’ Golden Glades Elementary School. An educator since 2003, Allen comes from a family of educators and has been in the field of education at every K-12 level, both as a teacher and as an administrator. He was selected to participate in a two-year Florida Turnaround Leadership program, to lead a turnaround school.
He also is a recipient of the Presidential Award for outstanding community service and volunteer work through various organizations including the Best Buddies program.
In addition, Allen has spent time as an athletic coach for the Police Athletic League and various schools in which he was worked. When he is not running a school, he spends his time trying to remain incredibly active in physical fitness be it training individuals or sharing nutritional insight.
In terms of leadership, Allen believes that “it truly is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped,” and believes that one must show confidence in people and be able to authentically build sustainable relationships if one is to move any organization, let alone a turnaround school. He also noted, “there is great power in people and that needs to be felt.”
Jason Allen holds a Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership (EdS) and two master’s degrees — one in psychology and the other in curriculum and instruction — from Nova Southeastern University.
In 2018 U.S. News and World Report ranked New World School of the Arts No. 149 among 20,500 public high schools in the nation, No. 42 among all magnet schools nationwide and No. 17 among all public high schools in the state of Florida. NWSA is one of only 15 Demonstration Schools in the U.S., named by Magnet Schools of America. Since 1989, its high school student body has garnered 21 Presidential Scholars in the Arts, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students who exemplify academic excellence.
