Joe Sanchez announced today that he has filed to run for the vacant Miami-Dade County Commission District 5 seat, which includes the southern portion of Miami Beach and parts of the City of Miami, including Downtown, Little Havana, and sections of Brickell.

Sanchez, a lifelong resident of District 5, brings more than three decades of public service and law enforcement experience to the race. During last year’s Miami-Dade Sheriff’s primary, Sanchez earned the majority of votes in the precincts that make up District 5 — demonstrating broad local support and deep community roots.

“District 5 is my home: I’ve raised my children here, watched my mother grow old here, and seen this community grow,” said Sanchez. “I believe our residents deserve to be represented by one of their own, a true neighbor who understands their needs. That’s why I want to serve and help keep this district a strong, thriving home for all of us.”

A product of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Sanchez graduated from Miami Senior High and Miami Dade College before beginning a distinguished career in public service. He has lived in the county for more than 55 years, serving 36 of those years in law enforcement and community leadership.

Sanchez began his public service in 1987 with the Florida Highway Patrol, where he currently serves as Public Information Officer for South Florida. He also served eight years in the U.S. Army Reserves and 11 years as a Miami City Commissioner. In 1996, he was awarded a Medal of Valor by the Miami-Dade County Commission for his leadership in the ValueJet crash search and recovery effort in the Everglades.

“I’m advocating for a special election in District 5,” Sanchez said. “Not just for my candidacy, but because it’s the most democratic choice. Every voice in our community deserves to be heard, and it’s worth every dollar to let the people, not the politicians, decide who represents us.”
