Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has appointed Kenji Hirata as Consul General of the Consulate-General of Japan in Miami.

Hirata has extensive experience in Latin American Affairs, having served as director of the South America and Caribbean Division for MOFA and having been posted to the Embassies of Japan in Peru and Mexico.

“Florida and Japan have many established ties through one sister state and nine sister city partnerships as well as our educational and cultural exchanges,” Hirata said. “Japan is one of Florida’s largest trade partners and Japanese investment in the state accounts for nearly 26,000 jobs. I look forward to strengthening the bonds between the people of Japan and Florida.”

His numerous overseas postings include appointments in the Permanent Missions to the United Nations and the European Union as well as in the Embassies in United Arab Emirates and Spain. He is proficient in Spanish and English in addition to Japanese.

Hirata received a bachelor’s degree in law from Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo.
