The Kiwanis Club of Miami, the oldest Kiwanis club in South Florida, is celebrating its 100th birthday on May 22 with an anniversary dinner at Dapple Bar + Kitchen, 14501 S. Dixie Hwy.

According to board member and centennial chair Carole Johnson, the event, beginning at 5 p.m., will feature a history of the club — which began on May 30, 1921 — and feature highlights of the club’s major community service activities. The club is based in Kendall.

The Miami Kiwanis’ Centennial is just one event of Division 26 of the Florida District of Kiwanis, consisting of nine clubs serving Kendall, South Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys.

Another key event was the visit of Florida District of Kiwanis Governor Mary-Lynn Dejarlais who spoke to Division 26 clubs about the importance of continuing community service, despite the pandemic, as well as ongoing efforts to increase membership.

“Having the governor come down was an honor for our division,” said Erica Ávila, lieutenant governor for Division 26, a Homestead councilwoman and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Homestead-South Dade. “Her message was loud and clear: despite the pandemic, we are here to serve the needs of our community.”

Here are just some of the clubs in Division 26, one of the most active divisions in the Florida District, and their most recent projects.
