Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ (M-DCPS) high school graduation rate for the 2021-2022 school year reached an impressive 88.2 percent, a 2.6 percentage point increase from the rate of 85.6 percent in the 2018-2019 school year, the last pre-pandemic year, providing for a true comparison of graduation requirements. If charter schools are removed from the calculation, the graduation rate for traditional schools increases to 91.9 percent, which represents a 2.7 percentage point increase from the rate of 89.2 percent (excluding charters) in the 2018-2019 school year.

Below are some highlights of the District’s performance:

  • In 2022, M-DCPS’ graduation rate of 88.2 percent exceeded the state’s overall graduation rate of 87.3 percent by almost a full percentage point, with each of the following subgroups surpassing their counterparts statewide: Hispanic, White, Black, English Language Learners, Students with Disabilities, and Economically Disadvantaged.
  • Hispanic students increased by 2.2 percentage points compared to 2018-19 rising from to 86.7 percent to 88.9 percent, surpassing the current state rate of 85.9 percent.
  • White students increased by 2.7 percentage points compared to 2018-19 rising from 91.8 percent to 94.5 percent, surpassing the current state rate of 90.6 percent.
  • Black students increased by 2.9 percentage points compared to 2018-19 rising from 79.5 percent to 82.4 percent, surpassing the current state rate of 82 percent.
  • The District’s graduation rate for Students with Disabilities increased by 3.9 percentage points compared to 2018-19 rising from 82.1 points to 86 percent, surpassing the current state rate of 83.5 percent.
  • Economically Disadvantaged students increased by 1.7 percentage points compared to 2018-19 rising from 84.9 percent to 86.6 percent, surpassing the current state rate of 83.1 percent.
  • English Language Learners increased by 0.4 percentage points compared to 2018-19 rising from 74.7 percent to 75.1 percent, surpassing the current state rate of 73 percent.

“This graduation rate is a testament to the hard work and resiliency of our students, their families, and the collective effort of our School Board and those who educate and support our students daily,” said Schools Superintendent Dr. Jose L. Dotres. “Despite being impacted by school closures and quarantines during their 10th and 11th grade years, the perseverance of these students led to a higher graduation rate than in 2019, the most recent graduating class with no COVID-19 impact.”

It is important to note that in both the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years, when our graduation rates were 89.6 percent and 90.1 percent respectively, districts were authorized to waive the assessment graduation requirements in accordance with Florida’s Department of Education Order 2021-EO-02. However, waivers are no longer permitted as the assessment graduation requirements have been reinstated for the 2021-2022 school year.
