On April 26, 2024, School Board Member Luisa Santos, District 9, participated in the first-ever White House Summit for Sustainable and Healthy K-12 School Buildings and Grounds.

Working alongside the U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Department of Energy, and the Environmental Protection Agency, the summit fostered collaboration between government agencies and school communities across the country on issues relevant to equitable access to energy efficiency, climate resilience, and healthy school facilities where all students can reach their fullest potential.

Guided by the belief that the physical school environment plays an important role in helping students learn, participants to the event, which included teachers, students, school administrators, facilities and ground experts, advocates, and other stakeholders, shared experiences from their individual school communities and learned about opportunities for funding and resources to create more sustainable buildings and school grounds. One of the goals of this initiative is to tackle the climate crisis while improving student learning and protecting children’s health.

“It was an honor for me to attend this very important and informative summit. This summit affirms our collective commitment to provide students across the country with safe and healthy school environments,” said Board Member Santos.  “We must continue working together to ensure that all students have access to sustainable and healthy school grounds. This is an investment in our students, their education, and the future of our country.”
