Orlando Magic’s Paolo Banchero has been named the NBA Rookie of the Year for the 2022 season. Banchero, who was the first overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, had an impressive rookie season, averaging 20 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. He is the third player in Magic history to receive the honor, joining Shaquille O’Neal (1992-93) and Mike Miller (2000-01).
Banchero made a remarkable debut in the season opener for the Magic against the Detroit Pistons, where he recorded 27 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. The performance made him the fifth player in NBA history to have at least 25 points, five rebounds, and five assists in their debut. The last player to achieve this feat was LeBron James in 2003 against the Sacramento Kings.
Banchero’s consistency throughout the season was also noteworthy, as he matched LeBron James’ rookie season by tallying 40 games with over 20 points. This achievement puts him in elite company and solidifies his status as a rising star in the NBA.
