“Love where you live” is more than a catchy phrase—it’s a mindset that can significantly enhance our satisfaction with the quality of life in our city. This perspective challenges us to get involved with what’s happening around our city, appreciate the successes, and focus on the ways in which we can make our communities even better. When we love where we live, we value our neighborhoods enough to work together to enhance them create a sense of
belonging and foster a richer, more fulfilling life for ourselves and those around us.
Loving where you live starts with an attitude of appreciation. A very well-known part of our city’s history is that when we pushed forward to form our own local government, many thought we wouldn’t survive long. Yet, here we are 20 years later as one of the most desirable places to own a home in the County. Our properties increase in values faster than almost everywhere else. We have an award winning Youth Council Program. We have a highly recognized Senior Program. We are one of very few cities in the County that offers a Community Benefit Fund providing grants to residents for home repairs ($3,000), small businesses ($2,500), child care ($500), and tree trimming ($300). Our leadership continues to be some of the most respected elected officials in the County. Presently, our mayor, Felicia Brunson, is President of the Broward League of Cities.
However, it’s important to acknowledge that loving where you live doesn’t mean ignoring
its flaws or challenges. Every community has areas that need improvement. Whether it’s
addressing resident complaints about nuisances, improving the visual appeal of our
streets, and/or tackling the rising cost of insurance, loving where you live means caring
enough to collaborate with residents to identify and address these challenges, rather
than simply complaining or feeling disconnected.
HOW CAN I HELP YOU TO LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE?
I came into this endeavor committed to doing the work that my neighbors said needed to be done, and I am looking forward to taking on additional priorities that come from you. Is there something you really think our city officials need to pay more attention to? Is there a service or resource you or your family need? If so, I want to hear from you!
