The Miami-Dade County League of Cities conducted its 70th annual gala on June 8th at Lowe’s Coral Gables hotel. The black-tie reception and celebration had a crowd of mayors and other municipal officials from around the county to observe the installation of new officers.

Palmetto Bay Mayor Karyn Cunningham was sworn in as the new president of the organization that was established in 1953. Outgoing president Mayor Rodney Harris, who had been serving since 2023, was present, as well as members of the MDCLC Executive Board, and Juan Carlos “JC” Bermudez, currently a member of the Advisory Board of the United States Conference of Mayors, as well as the Vice Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Transportation Planning Organization, who is running for County Commission Seat in District 12.

Addressing the crowd, Mayor Cunningham mentioned the video that had been shown with clips from every city, village and town in Miami-Dade County, highlighting the diversity and beauty that is the unique place we all call home.

“Separately, they were beautiful but together they created a work of art,” said Mayor Cunningham. “The League’s municipalities may be miles apart, but our citizens stand shoulder to shoulder on all of the important issues that affect our families, our property, our safety and our day-to-day quality of life. It is predicted that 30,000 cities in the United States will face some sort of population decline in the next decade. The implications of this massive decline in population will bring unprecedented challenges to those cities including potential disruptions in basic services like transit, clean water, electricity and internet access. But guess what county is predicted to have major increases in population. You got it—Miami-Dade County. The decisions we make for the residents of our cities and collectively for our county will determine whether we can sustain this growth.”

The MDCLC represents 34 cities throughout Miami-Dade County. The organization meets monthly to discuss items of interest and concerns affecting residents.
