Mayor debates

The mayoral debate for the 2020 election season is set for Tuesday, Apr. 7, as candidates running for mayor of Miami-Dade County will take to the stage at 7 p.m. in McCarthy Auditorium, located on the Kendall Campus of Miami Dade College, 11011 SW 104 St.
Preceding the big event, a light buffet dinner will be served, from 6 to 6:45 p.m., allowing candidates to mingle with debate attendees.

All candidates running for the mayoral seat, which is Miami-Dade County’s top elected position, overseeing 28,000 employees and serving 2.7 million residents, confirmed their participation, including:
Monique Barley, a local entrepreneur;
Esteban L. Bovo Jr., County Commissioner-District 13;
Daniella Levine Cava, County Commissioner-District 8;
Jean Monestime, County Commissioner-District 2;
Alex Penelas, former County Mayor, and
Xavier Suarez, County Commissioner-District 7.

The 90-minute debate, organized and hosted by Miami’s Community Newspapers and Miami Dade College, is open to all county residents and guests.

“While the official rules of the debate are still under review, we encourage all interested voters and residents, young and old, to join us at this historic event,” said Grant Miller, publisher of Miami’s Community Newspapers. “It will be a true debate, in the sense that all candidates will be asked a series of questions by moderators, and their opponents will then offer rebuttals. Thus way, the candidates have an opportunity for real dialogue.”

He also noted that rules of decorum at Miami Dade College will be in place for the candidates and audience members to follow. More details to come.

“I am excited that this event is coming to fruition and, like so many members of the community, I am quite looking forward to it,” said Michael Miller, executive editor of Miami’s Community Newspapers. “I believe public debate is key to an authentic democratic process — and regardless of outcome, this event will be a win for all the citizens of
Miami-Dade County.”

Doors to the McCarthy Auditorium, Room 6120, will open at 6 p.m. Complimentary parking will be available on the west side of the campus. For information send email to grant@cnews.net.
