Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred in unincorporated Central Broward near Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, June 22.
The crash took place at approximately 12 p.m. that Thursday, near the intersection of Northwest 29th Terrace and Northwest Fourth Street. According to investigators, Robert L. Johnson was traveling northbound in a gray 2008 Chevrolet Colorado LT pick-up truck on Northwest 29th Terrace. As Johnson approached the intersection of Northwest Fourth Street, he came to a complete stop.
Detectives say at some point, while stopped at the intersection, Johnson’s vehicle rolled through the intersection at a slow speed. The pick-up truck then veered off the roadway and collided with a chain link fence, which stopped the Chevy.
Johnson’s family and friends, who were near the crash, removed him from the vehicle and attempted to render aid until Lauderhill Fire Rescue arrived on scene.
Paramedics transported Johnson to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment. He was subsequently pronounced deceased at 12:51 p.m.
Based on information provided by family members on scene, investigators believe Johnson sustained a medical event prior to the crash.
Excessive speed is not considered a factor in this case. The investigation continues.
