The New York Mets have been dealt a major blow as their ace pitcher, Max Scherzer, has been suspended for 10 games by Major League Baseball (MLB). This decision comes after Scherzer was found to have an illegal substance on his glove during the fourth inning of their recent 5-3 victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Scherzer had a number of interactions with the umpires throughout the game prior to his ejection. During the third inning, he was told by Phil Cuzzi that he needed to wash his hands and reapply the rosin. Scherzer complied and washed his hands with alcohol, which resulted in his hands becoming sticky. Later in the game, he claimed that he was told to switch gloves as the original one had too much rosin present on it.
Scherzer will begin serving his suspension until May 1st, in which he will be eligible to return to the lineup against their division rival, the Atlanta Braves. However, because of the timing of this suspension Scherzer is only set to miss only one start. Nonetheless, this will be a tough loss for the team, as Scherzer has been one of their most reliable pitchers this season.
In addition to the suspension, Scherzer was also slapped with a fine, which he has decided not to appeal. While he may have had doubts about the validity of the league’s decision, he has chosen to accept the punishment and move on.
