The first report of findings by the Miami Artist Census (MAC) has been released today, highlighting six key areas of interest with digestible nuggets of data and simple easy-to-read charts. The two-page report, titled “Prologue: The Big Picture”, is now available to download on the independent group’s website. Designed to be folded as a zine or printed as a one-page poster at any size, MAC encourages folks to download, share, and print the report as widely as they wish.
Since closing the first-ever county-wide artists survey, the Miami Artist Census team has been carefully analyzing and visualizing the data collected from 443 Miami-Dade County artists in a broad spectrum of disciplines, representing a range of identities, including race, gender, age, and ability. With “Prologue”, team members Harmony Honig, Carrie Sieh, and misael soto have selected key data points and notable observations to share with the community in anticipation of the more robust, layered reports to come.
Issues highlighted in “Prologue” include: income, employment, debt, healthcare, the challenges of living in Miami, and the hardship of sustaining an art practice amongst it all.
“The data we’ve analyzed so far is beginning to take shape as a narrative of who we are as a community of artists. Now we’re starting to dig deeper, looking for possible connections and patterns,” says Sieh, artist and Miami Artist Census Data Analyst.
MAC hopes community members and local artists will engage with the data and feel emboldened to action by the numbers. They also invite you to sign up to their mailing list to be the first to hear about their followup in-depth reports as they are released.
The Miami Artist Census is an independent, artist-run research initiative that identifies and analyzes facts about the needs of Miami-based artists — the first of its kind in Florida. Made for artists by artists, the county-wide data project collected information to help public and private funders know where and how to allocate funding for local artists, and provide public officials with the data needed to support policies responding to artists’ needs.
Furthermore, it will give artists, art institutions, researchers, and the public, a clearer picture of what today’s Miami artist community looks like for years to come.
