Miami-Dade County Animal Services (Animal Services) proudly joins the global community in marking World Rabies Day, observed annually on September 28th. This year, in addition to educational efforts, Animal Services is proactively offering free rabies vaccines at our Pet Adoption and Protection Center in Doral, emphasizing the importance of rabies prevention.

World Rabies Day provides an opportunity to highlight the ongoing battle against this deadly disease. Rabies is a viral illness that can affect both animals and humans, posing a significant public health risk. Through education and awareness, significant steps can be taken towards its eradication.

Animal Services invites the community to participate in this effort by:
1.    Staying informed: Learn about the signs and symptoms of rabies in animals and humans. Knowledge is key to prevention.
2.    Vaccinating their pets against rabies: Ensure your pets are up to date with their rabies vaccinations.  Join us at our Doral location for free rabies vaccines on this special day to protect your pets and reduce the risk of transmission to humans.
3.    Being responsible pet owners: Spay or neuter your pets and keep them safely confined or on a leash when in public. Responsible pet ownership helps control the stray animal population and reduces the risk of rabies transmission.
4.    Reporting suspicious animals: If you encounter a wild or stray animal behaving strangely or erratically, do not approach it. Instead, contact Animal Services immediately by calling 311 and report it.
5.    Sharing knowledge: Help spread the word about rabies prevention. Share information and resources with your friends, neighbors, and community groups.

Annette Jose, Interim Director of Miami-Dade County Animal Services, stated, “On World Rabies Day, we celebrate the power of education to save lives. By raising awareness about rabies, we empower the community to protect themselves and their beloved pets.” We believe that offering free rabies vaccines on this significant day amplifies our commitment to rabies prevention. By coming together as a community, sharing knowledge, and providing free vaccinations, we can take steps towards a rabies-free future.
