Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava released the following statement in response to news that five political prisoners were released in Venezuela:
“We must continue to hold the brutal Maduro regime accountable to ensure the safe release of all political prisoners. While the release of these five individuals remains welcome news, we need additional action from the international community to guarantee opposition leaders can safely access the electoral system.
As Venezuelans head to the polls on Sunday for primary elections, the United States and democratic nations across the globe must remain vigilant. We witnessed firsthand how brutal dictators like Nicaragua’s Daniel Ortega have imprisoned political opponents. The U.S. needs to take proactive measures to guarantee free elections are held successfully, fulfilling the democratic promise to Venezuelans around the world.”
