Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust Announces Protective Measures for Miami-Dade Residents Experiencing Homelessness During Excessive Heat

Transportation to Cooling Sites, Water Distribution, and Education Campaign Among Efforts to Meet Immediate Needs.

With the potential of an Excessive Heat Warning in Miami-Dade County today and throughout the weekend, the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust continues active efforts to protect Miami-Dade residents experiencing unsheltered homelessness from the triple-digit heat.  Protective measures include:

  • Throughout the weekend, homeless outreach teams will be offering transportation to cooling sites.
  • Thanks to a generous donation from Publix Super Markets, homeless outreach teams have water to provide to persons experiencing unsheltered homelessness.  A limited number of additional cooling supplies, including gaiters (sun protection), cooling towels, ice packs and electrolyte packets are also being distributed to highly vulnerable individuals on the streets.
  • Homeless Trust-contracted providers including Camillus House’s Day Center and Miami Rescue Mission’s indoor feeding site are extending hours to provide additional cooling site options.
  • At emergency shelters, accommodations are being made to provide additional hydration stations; open cafeterias, dorms and other common areas throughout the day; and add fans and other cooling devices to outdoor areas.
  • tri-lingual flyer continues to be disseminated liberally by outreach teams to clients.  It includes QR codes listing countywide cooling sites, which include Miami-Dade libraries and parks.
  • All Homeless Trust contracted providers have been provided Miami-Dade County-developed palm cards with information about heat-related illnesses.
  • The Homeless Helpline is open through the weekend – (877) 994-4357 – will provide information on cooling center locations.
