The National Assessment Centers Association (NAC) has selected Miami-Dade County’s Juvenile Services Department to present at the Assessment Center Spotlight its Hospital-based Violence Intervention Program (HVIP), and the collaboration with the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), Jackson Health System’s Ryder Trauma Center, and community-based organizations, that identify and respond to victims of gun violence to reduce future victimization. The virtual event will take place on November 29, 2022, from 3:00pm-4:00pm.
“In Miami-Dade County we are leveraging every resource and opportunity we have to address gun violence in our community because it takes a village to keep our community safe,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “Through this program, we are working closely with our first responders, healthcare professionals and community partners to ensure that victims and their families receive the necessary intervention and case management services when they need it most. By establishing these critical hospital-based measures upfront, we can reduce the likelihood of retaliatory shootings and stem the tide of violence.”
Hospital-based Violence Intervention programs (HVIPs) are recognized as effective Community Violence Intervention Strategies (CVI) by federal and state organizations. Miami-Dade County’s HVIP is a multidisciplinary program that combines the efforts of masters-level Social Workers, and medical staff with trusted community-based partners to provide safety planning, services, and trauma-informed care to violently injured people. Since the inception of Miami-Dade County’s HVIP, victims of group-related gun violence have received intervention, care, and follow-up services such as crisis intervention, linkage to community-based services, emergency relocation, home visits, and long-term case management.
“One of the services the National Assessment Center Association provides is elevating best practices and innovation that is led by Assessment Centers and their partners around the country. Learning about the Miami-Dade County Juvenile Assessment Center’s role in the Hospital-based Violence Intervention Program as an effort to intervene in community violence, we felt it was our role to help share this work with the field and the Assessment Center network”, according to the NAC Executive Director, Molli Cook.
