The Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) is looking for you if you have a valid Class B or higher rated Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and at least two years of experience operating medium- or heavy-duty automotive equipment such as automated or manual garbage trucks, large dump trucks, tractor-trailers, passenger buses or similar equipment. Starting pay for Waste Truck Drivers at DSWM is $39,092.30 and it comes with a County benefits package including health insurance coverage (for which drivers are immediately eligible upon hire), “4×10” work week (four days on, three days off each week) and much more.
“I started 25 years ago as a temporary employee in this industry and I’ve had many promotional opportunities along the way, both in the private and public sector, to ultimately Director of the largest and best integrated solid waste system in the Southeastern United States,” said Mike Fernandez, DSWM Director. “I also still carry my Class B license to this day. I hope my story inspires others to join the solid waste industry, where the sky is truly the limit!”
“We have several employees who began their careers here as drivers and moved up into management, and we have others who were happy driving their routes in the neighborhoods and retired as drivers,” said Michelle Sifontes, Chief, DSWM Human Resources Division. “It’s a very rewarding job and the benefits are very competitive.”
In addition to the previously mentioned pay for DSWM Waste Truck Drivers, drivers are eligible for a $70 biweekly premium, an additional 5% Waste Collections Disposal pay supplement, annual merit increases based on performance, and a yearly uniform maintenance allowance. Drivers also receive 13 paid holidays and four “floating” holidays (paid days off).
“We offer all our employees an incredible benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, wellness programs, paid leave, sick leave, contributory membership in the Florida Retirement System, and so much more,” Ms. Sifontes said. “And we offer opportunities for career growth, with on-the-job training and promotions from within the department.”
DSWM is a great place to work. The Department provides waste collection and recycling services to more than 340,000 households in unincorporated Miami-Dade County and the following ten municipalities: Aventura, Cutler Bay, Doral, Miami Gardens, Miami Lakes, Opa-locka, Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, Sunny Isles Beach, and Sweetwater. As a Waste Truck Driver, you will play an important role in providing exceptional waste collection services that protect, preserve and improve our environment and the quality of life in our community.
Driver safety is important at DSWM. On the job training and safety training are provided. Waste Truck Drivers are usually socially distanced while on the job, and both personal protective equipment and sanitation supplies such as wipes and hand-sanitizer are provided. Trucks are sanitized regularly as well.
Qualified applicants will be subject to a screening process including, but not limited to:
- a) Verification of the current status of commercial driver license.
- b) Review of the entire driving record (State of Florida and current/previous employers).
- c) Structured interviews, background checks, physical exam and employment verification, to include attendance and disciplinary records, and a performance assessment.
Vacancies may occur at any of several locations Countywide. The candidate must be able to work holidays and at various locations as assigned. All assignments will be based on departmental needs. Waste Truck Drivers are considered essential employees and are required to work in emergency situations such as hurricanes, tropical storms, and other emergencies.
