Today, the Board of County Commissioners approved a $19 million Lateral Expansion Program as part of Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s Connect 2 Protect septic to sewer conversion initiative. The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) will install 600 public-side sewer service laterals, a critical step in enabling future connections to sewer infrastructure.
The expansion program focuses on properties that have existing sanitary sewer infrastructure available for connection and are existing water utility customers. The installation of public-side laterals facilitates customer connection to the public wastewater system and allows for the abandonment of septic tanks.
“My administration is committed to investing in essential infrastructure projects to build a future-ready community and provide the best services to our residents,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “This program marks a significant step forward in our continued efforts to safeguard the public’s health and protect our waterways including our beloved Biscayne Bay.”
The County’s Connect 2 Protect program is a multi-million-dollar countywide initiative that provides sanitary sewer service to residents currently served by septic tank systems.
“We are committed to expanding customer connectivity and enhancing the efficiency of Miami-Dade County’s wastewater infrastructure, which improves the quality of life within our community,” said WASD Director Roy Coley.
Approximately 120,000 properties in Miami-Dade County are currently served by septic tank systems. By replacing septic systems and connecting to the County’s sanitary sewer system, the risks associated with septic tank system failures -such as groundwater contamination and nutrient pollution into waterways- can effectively be reduced, ensuring the long-term health of the community and environment. Additional benefits include the potential for increased property values and flexibility for home improvements.
Mayor Levine Cava launched Connect 2 Protect in 2022. Currently, there are approximately 11,000 parcels in various stages of development as part of the program. Additional information can be found on Connect 2 Protect’s website.
