With the holidays just around the corner and children soon to be home on break, there’s no
better way to burn off some energy than to spend a day at the park. Jackie Shakespeare,
Assistant Director of the Miami Gardens Parks and Recreation Department, reminds us that
Miami Gardens has many to choose from. “All of our programming is now in-person,” she said, encouraging residents to take advantage of the natural resources of the City.
Cloverleaf Park and Andover Park reopened this past spring, and their brand-new facilities were worth the wait. With a new state-of-the-art playground, outdoor basketball courts, and a meeting room, the whole family can enjoy Cloverleaf Park for kids’ parties, celebrations, or just a day of play. Andover Park’s renovation was also highly anticipated, and it now houses Miami Gardens’ first sensory playground, an exciting and encouraging space, particularly for children with autism. “Sensory play helps children with autism cope better when dealing with different sounds and textures,” Shakespeare explained.
Various activities are available for people of all ages. Kids, teens, and adults can enjoy soccer, art, tennis, gymnastics, dance, chess, photography and digital arts, violin lessons, martial arts, baseball, and more. “In the upcoming months, we will also offer boxing, wrestling, and lacrosse,” said Shakespeare.
Seniors can get in on the fun too. “The Senior Family Center also has a variety of activities,
such as a walking club, active seniors dance class, meditation and relaxation, chair pilates,
painting workshops, computer classes, monthly special events, and field trips.”
While school is out this winter, rest assured that your kiddos will have plenty to do. The Parks and Recreation Department currently offers afterschool programs and Kids Day Off camps on teacher planning days. In the next few months, there will also be Fall and Winter camps for children grades K-5 at King Park, Carol City Park and Rolling Oaks Park, and camps for middle and high school children at Norwood Park.
Shakespeare invites dedicated individuals to consider Miami Gardens’ Parks and Recreation
Department for career opportunities. “The City of Miami Gardens is looking for energetic and creative individuals, lifeguards, coaches, and instructors to add to our team,” she said, “Become a Parks and Recreation Professional.”
Full-time and part-time Parks and Recreation positions are now available. To apply, visit the city website at www.miamigardens-fl.gov.
