With a focus on community engagement and a progressive approach to their work, the Miami Gardens Police Department aims to foster a strong partnership between law enforcement and the community. Ahead of the summer months, Assistant Chief Joseph Nargiso shared some important updates regarding safety and new initiatives.
General Information
Within the department, there have been significant advancements. Services provided to the community have been enhanced by upgrades to communications center software, report writing software, property room processing and ballistic and crime scene investigations technology. Two new teams — the Community Action Team and the Special Events Unit — have been created.
The department has been a partner in all of Miami Gardens’ major events this year, including Formula One, Jazz in the Gardens and Senior Center activities. We spearheaded the Special Olympics Torch Run campaign and partnered with Councilman Robert Stephens III to provide health screenings to student athletes participating in the Miami Gardens Police Athletic League Elite track team.
Residents are invited to get involved in The Citizens Advisory Committee and attend the Citizen’s Police Academy. The department also organizes various community outreach events throughout the year, including Coffee with a Cop and National Night Out.
Be Aware, Stay Alert
Looking ahead, the department is focused on ensuring resident safety during upcoming festivities such as Juneteenth, Rolling Loud and the City’s Fall Festival. We will continue to engage youth through the Miami Gardens Police Athletic League’s developmental seminars, providing young people with real-world skills and offering tutoring on test-taking strategies, resume writing, etiquette, leadership and conflict resolution. “The Miami Gardens Police Department believes in investing in tomorrow by investing in our youth today,” said Assistant Chief Nargiso.
Residents are asked to report suspicious activities promptly and to exercise safe driving habits. Observing mental health concerns, they should check in on loved ones, friends and neighbors, especially during times of crisis.
With the summer season approaching, residents are reminded not to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, where temperatures inside can climb higher than those outside very quickly. The department also urges residents to prepare for the hurricane season by gradually gathering hurricane supplies now in order to avoid last-minute rushes and supply shortages.
For the 4th of July, be careful with fireworks. All fireworks displays should be supervised by adults, children should maintain a safe distance and hoses or fire extinguishers should be readily available.
For those planning vacations, it is important to avoid advertising that your home will be unattended. Deter potential break-ins with measures such as securing doors and windows, installing timers for lights and drawing curtains or blinds. Residents can notify the police department of their plans to travel and create a watch order for added security.
Beyond calling 911 for emergencies, the front desk at the Miami Gardens Police Department is open 24/7 for immediate, non-emergency situations. Anonymous tips and community concerns can be submitted on the department’s website, www.miamigardenspolice.org.
The Miami Gardens Police Department is dedicated to protecting and serving the residents of Miami Gardens and eagerly awaits engagement and feedback from community members.
