The students of Miami Palmetto Senior High School’s Tennis Team, led by Coach Kelly Gibson, have been leading the way this 2022 – 2023 school season, not only on the court with a 8 – 0 record to date and sweeping the Greater Miami Athletic Conference (GMAC) last month, but also in various ways off the court.

Last weekend (April 1, 2023), Coach Gibson and her Miami Palmetto Tennis Team were invited by the Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency (LAORA) / University of Miami to celebrate Donate Life Month at the Miami Open and spread awareness on the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation as well as honor and celebrate donor heroes, recipients and their families. Miami Palmetto High recently welcomed a Student Organ Donation Advocate (SODA) chapter at the school, led by teacher Joyce Brislawn, and this was one of the events in which students had the opportunity to participate and be educated to advocate on organ donation.

“It’s so important for our students and players to be involved in the community on an ongoing basis,” said Coach Gibson. “Today was not only a wonderful educational experience but also truly meaningful as one of my team captain’s grandfather had a heart transplant.”

Last fall, the Miami Palmetto Tennis Team partnered up with Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) club, also led by Brislawn, and donated a truck load of hurricane relief supplies to Fort Myers, Florida residents affected by the devastating Hurricane Ian. The importance of “giving back “to different communities in need through community service is an important skill that Coach Gibson and Brislawn teach to the athletes and club members of HOSA.

Palmetto High’s Tennis Team and HOSA club recruited their fellow student body to donate supplies in need to the victims of the recent hurricane that left many without homes and essentials to live daily. The outpouring of students’ contributions overflowed the teachers’ rooms and touched the hearts and hands of many in need.

The truck load of supplies collected were delivered to Iona McGregor Fire Department in Fort Myers. The hard- working crew of this fire department delivered the goods on behalf of Miami Palmetto’s Tennis Team and HOSA club to the Gladiolus Food Pantry who was operating seven days a week since the storm, serving upwards of 8,000 people a day. The Food Pantry moved from being a food only resource to distributing necessities of all kinds to the community. They were very appreciative of the efforts of the high school students
to help their neighboring community in need.
