This spring service clubs are busier than ever making a difference. At the end of March, members of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables (RCCG) returned from a mission to the Dominican Republic.
The trip was led by the club’s International Committee chair Carol Brock, who was accompanied by several committee members including Yolanda Woodbridge; Bill Quesenberry and wife, Chie, as well as Jennifer Kyla.
Aside from delivering school supplies to children, the trip also served to check on the projects the club’s foundation has been supporting at the Alfalit preschools in that country. Rotarians involved in the visit were able to meet the children who were most grateful and excited to receive the supplies. This is one of Rotary Club’s many international outreach efforts that help support worthy projects and programs year after year.
Back home, on Mar. 28, Actors’ Playhouse held its opening night for Waitress, an incredibly funny and heartwarming musical with music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles that this writer could see again and again. It was a delight from start to finish and one that is a “must see” musical.
Les Catering provided savory pies for the guests that evening and, of course, Bacardi provided the bar. It is always great to experience opening night and chat with executive producer Barbara Stein and founding chair Dr. Larry Stein, without whom there would not be an Actors’ Playhouse. Of course, artistic director David Arisco is always amazing and the cast and musicians were superb. This musical runs through Apr. 20. For tickets, go to www.actorsplayhouse.org.
Speaking of great shows, South Florida PBS’s Da Vinci Immersive Art Experience runs through Apr. 28, at their studio in Boynton Beach. There are just a few thousand tickets left as of this writing, so book the event now to secure your spot. Visit www.southfloridapbs/event.
May brings us many events surrounding Mother’s Day. Coral Gables Woman’ Club, a club that owns and operates a free children’s dental clinic, has several activities coming up in May to support the clinic. On May 3, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Kendra Scott in Dadeland is hosting a Sip and Shop for Mother’s Day with 20 percent of the sales to benefit the clinic. Then on May 10, the club will hold its annual Mother’s Day Tea titled “Passage to India.”
This event always is a great way to get together with friends and family to celebrate moms and those who are much loved. Come in costume if you like and plan on lots of great photo ops, music, entertainment, food and more. For tickets go to Eventbrite or gfwccoralgableswomansclub.org.
By the way, there still is time to sign up the CGWC’s June 28, cruise to also support the club’s free children dental clinic.
Finally, the Miami Marlins vs. the New York Mets game on Apr. 1 served to support the second annual One Day for Jackson, an annual day of giving for the foundation. The Marlins won to top off a great day that was enjoyed by several who have been treated at Jackson including Briana Denny whose life was saved. Denny, a One Day for Jackson Miracle Story, threw the first pitch, and Mario Ramil, local comedian and foundation supporter, provided entertainment with his beautiful family including his toddler who danced and stole the show.
Flavia Llizo, CEO, Jackson Health Foundation, spoke of the importance of Jackson Health, Miami’s safety net hospital system and noted that 100 percent of funds raised during this campaign will go toward supporting Jackson’s mission to provide a single, high standard of quality care for the residents of Miami-Dade, regardless of their ability to pay.
